I did a lot of research on the best fishing kayaks for sale in the market right now. There are quite a few things to consider and the best fishing kayak for one person might not work for the next! With the influx of people like you getting outside and on the water, I have included as much information as I could to help everyone choose the best kayak for their needs.
Personally, I wanted the best kayak for relatively calm lakes, and wanted to ensure that my days on the water would be enjoyable, and not filled with fear of tipping kayaks, or not enough room for my tackle and gear for the day and weighing the option of bringing my golden retriever along with me for a paddle.
You probably have some similar needs, and some different ones as well. You probably do not need to take a giant dog into account, but maybe you want a double kayak to bring a buddy along. Whatever your needs, this guide will help you choose the best fishing kayak for you!

Types of Kayaks
There are several types of kayaks and canoes, but typically anglers will gravitate towards recreational kayaks. They are popular with novice paddlers, photographers, or fishermen. Most recreational kayaks are 10 or 12 feet long. Specialized angling kayaks take many features of these kayaks and add things like rod holders. They also take some features of touring kayaks, such as rudders, to help keep a straight course (more on the best fishing kayak features below).
I have outlined the basic types below.
Sit on Top Kayaks
Sit on top kayaks are user-friendly, stable and easy to paddle. They are easy to get in and out of and can be used in many types of water including saltwater, rivers, lakes and canals. They have a sealed hull and the paddler sits on top of a molded seat.
These types of kayaks are typically wider, which makes them quite stable (something important for a fisherman to consider), but the wider hull makes them slower than a touring model. When I am headed out on the water, distance is not usually my aim, so the speed is not a factor that I consider in my own personal purchase!
These kayaks give you a wet ride, as there is no spray skirt to keep you dry, and no protection from wind. There are many brands that make a sit-on-top kayak for sale, and they range from basic models that cost a few hundred dollars to deluxe pedal-powered and motorized kayaks that cost a few thousand.
Inflatable Kayaks for Sale
Inflatable kayaks are the perfect choice of kayak for compact storage needs. They can inflate in minutes and are best for those who paddle on mostly calm waters. While I initially thought these would be like a blow-up toy, they can be surprisingly sturdy. While these make a great inexpensive fishing kayak, you do not necessarily want the cheapest ones out there.
Some of the reviews say they are exactly as I had imagined. Like getting on a blow-up boat! But do not totally throw inflatable kayaks for sale off your radar. There are a few great ones out there that offer a sturdy ride. I did a lot of research on these for my daughter who just purchased the Intex K1
You can click on the link to read my review of the great inflatable kayaks out there and why she settled on the Intex K1 but why I have suggested alternative ones in this guide!
Sit in Kayaks
Sit inside kayaks share many of the same features of a sit-on-top kayak (SOT kayak). The major difference is the sit-in kayak has an enclosed place to sit. It is known as the cockpit and the area around it is known as the cockpit rim. A lot of sit-in kayaks have a spray skirt that will keep the paddler dry from spray from the paddles or other drips of water.
Because you sit lower, these kayaks will shelter you from the wind and will likely give you a warmer ride. The downside of the sit-in kayak style is if you flip your kayak, it is much tougher to recover as it will be full of water. There are plenty of sit-in kayaks for sale, just like the sit on top models, which gives you plenty of options, if this is your kayak of choice. Living in the cooler Pacific Northwest I gave these a good look, as a warm ride makes for a nicer day in the spring and fall!
So what makes a “fishing kayak” compared to the styles listed above?
The best fishing kayaks are made specifically for anglers and can be: sit on top, or sit inside models. They have rod holders, cooler holders, and features like a built-in tackle box. They usually have extra mounts for a GPS or fish finder and some are even hands-free and pedal-powered or motorized. Because many are based on the sit-on-top kayak styles, they are often referred to as a stand-up fishing kayak and sturdy enough for a steady fisherman to stand and cast.
The Best Fishing Kayak Reviews Comparison Chart
There are over 100 angler kayaks for sale, I have narrowed down my top picks and outlined the pros and cons of each of the models in the comparison chart below and the sit in and the sit on top fishing kayak reviews at the end of this guide. Not everyone has an endless amount of money to spend on their hobby, so I have hunted for the best price on kayaks and offered my opinion on the best budget kayak to spend your hard-earned money on.
Take a look through this chart and my reviews below and I hope I can make your purchasing decision much easier! Whether bass fishing kayaks are on the top of your list, or the best lightweight kayak, some of the ones you will see on the chart are the best-rated kayak on amazon while others offer features that are ideal for a fisherman like me and that is why they have made the list!
Best Fishing Kayak Reviews
The Best Fishing Kayak Overall
Everyone is going to have their own opinion, but for me, a 6’2″ 190 lb fisherman, This was my first choice:
Ocean Kayak Prowler 13 Angler Sit on Top Fishing Kayak
The Ocean Kayak Prowler is known as a very stable fishing kayak (but not designed for standing to cast specifically). It has below deck rod storage, a comfort plus eat, 2 rod holders, a rear oversized tank well, and can support 450 lbs. It is a bit on the larger side at 13′ 4″ and weighs 56 lbs.
Why was this my number one?
Well, when I am out on the water alone, this kayak is comfortable to paddle and its size makes it a fast ride to get to my favorite fishing spots. The front click to lock hatch is a good size and I can easily fit everything I need inside. The foot wells are nice, but I will admit that the seat is not the best for an all day paddle. While I am often on calm waters, I know that this yak will cut any waves I come up against, so that peace of mind makes me happy.
This kayak was also a reasonable price point for my budget. It offered exactly what I wanted and came in at a price I liked!
There is a great youtube review to give you a good look at it:

Best Fishing Kayak under $500
Sun Dolphin Journey 10-Foot Sit on Top Fishing Kayak for Sale
The Sun Dolphin Journey is a lightweight kayak, it weighs just over 40 lbs. It is my top pick for the best fishing kayak under $1000 and under $500. With these light kayaks, its maximum supported weight is 250 lbs. If you are 6” tall I would suggest going with the larger model. The Sun Dolphin Journey has two flush mount and one swivel fishing rod holders. Other features include, a large seat, protective thigh pads and adjustable foot braces, retractable carrying handles, paddle holders storage and shock cord deck rigging.
Note that with this model, the paddles are sold separately. I recommend Shoreline Marine Kayak Paddle 96” to go with this kayak.
You can read more details about why this is a great fishing kayak in my full review here!
Top Fishing Kayak Reviews
Old Town Predator MX
This is one of the popular Old Town Kayaks for sale. It is 12 feet and can hold a max of 400 lbs. It weighs 58 lbs and known for its stability. It is the perfect model for fly fishing and has a slip-resistant deck. With 6 mounts there is plenty of room for your rod holders, GPS, or camera. Huge storage offers room for your day’s catch, your cooler, your tackle box, or battery for a trolling motor. The Old Town Predator MX has side mount paddle storage as well. While other models offer the option of standing and casting, if you plan on doing quite a bit of it, I suggest seriously considering the Old Town Predator MX.
BKC Brooklyn Kayak Company UH-FK184 9’2” Sit on Top Fishing Kayak
This angler kayak for sale from the Brooklyn Kayak Company is shorter than average and weights just 45 lbs. It has a 250 lb capacity and comes with a deluxe seat and a two piece aluminum paddle. This sit on fishing kayak also features 4 flush mount rod holders, two sealed hatches and four carry handles. I like that this model comes with a paddle and a decent seat right off the bat, but it is quite short, so keep that in mind. If you want something short for the back of the truck this kayak could be the perfect recreational kayak.
Sun Dolphin Bali SS10 Foot Sit on Top Kayak
TheSun Dolphin Bali SS 10 Foot Sit on Top Kayak Sun Dolphin Bali SS is a stable kayak, contains a dry storage compartment with shock cord deck rigging, contains a portable accessory carrier for extra storage or a tow behind. It holds 250 lbs and also has a P.A.C. (Portable Accessory Carrier) that can be used as a tow behind or extra storage compartment. It weighs only 44 lbs. Sun Dolphin makes great affordable kayaks. If you have a lower budget, definitely consider this option or the otherSun Dolphin Kayaks.
Sun Dolphin Excursion Sit-in Fishing Kayak 10 Feet
The Sun Dolphin Excursion is one of the popular sit in kayaks for sale and works great for calm rivers and lakes. Like the Journey, it has storage, two flush mount rod holders as well as a swivel rod holder and an electronics console. It is only 40 lbs and 10 feet long. Great if portaging is part of your day. Paddles are sold separately. I recommend Shoreline Marine Kayak Paddle 96” to go with this.
Old Town Vapor 10 Angler Fishing Kayak
This 10 foot fishing kayak has a comfort flex seat, adjustable foot braces, moulded carry handles, and storage. Old Town Vapor 10 is an excellent choice for recreational paddlers and sportsman. It has two behind the seat rod holders, and bungees. It weighs just under 50 lbs and can hold 325 lbs.
Lifetime Muskie Angler Sit-on-Top 10 foot Fishing Kayak
The Lifetime Muskie Angler 10foot lake and river fishing kayak comes with a padded seat back, front and rear shock cords, storage hatches in the rear and center, two flush mounted fishing pole holders, a top mount rod holder, paddle cradles with shock cords, one adult black paddle (1066285), and T-handles for easy carrying. It has a 275 lbs weight capacity and weights 52 lbs. I like that this model comes with paddles.
Vibe Kayaks Skipjack 90
This cheap sit on top kayak is one of the shortest around at just 9 feet long. Although short, the Vibe Skipjack 90 can still hold 300 lbs and has 2 sealed hatches, 4 flush mount fishing rod holders, 4 carry handles, and comes with a deluxe seat and a paddle. Do not let the pink camo color in the comparison chart above turn you off, there are various colors to choose from! This stable fishing kayak means smaller people will be able to stand and cast.
Sun Dolphin Sit Inside Aruba SS 12 foot Kayak
As I mentioned above, the 10 foot Sun Dolphin models have a low weight capacity. The 12 foot Sun Dolphin Aruba weighs less than 50 lbs and can hold 395 lbs. It comes with a P.A.C. (Portable Accessory Carrier) which can be used as extra storage, tow behind or as a backpack. It also features flush mount fishing rod holders, protective thigh pads, adjustable foot braces, covered console, retractable carrying handles and shock cord deck rigging.
For the larger angler, this higher weight capacity, as well as larger yak allows for more comfort and stability. It is not full of bells and whistles but this model makes a great sea fishing kayak and is recommended by many as the best fishing kayak under 1000.
Sun Dolphin Excursion 12 foot Sit in Kayak
Another inexpensive kayak, the Sun Dolphin Excursion 12 foot weighs just 47 lbs. It comes with two flush mount rod holders and one swivel holder. A popular option for rivers and lakes, I love how lightweight the Sun Dolphin kayaks are. It also features a large open cockpit, adjustable padded seat, storage compartment, shock cord deck rigging, adjustable foot braces, water bottle holder and protective thigh pads. The Excursion is a stable kayak, and is a bit more of a “fishing kayak” compared to the Aruba, but weigh your needs and compare the prices here.
Sun Dolphin Journey 12 foot Sit on Top Fishing Kayak
The Sun Dolphin Journey Sit-on-top one person kayak is great for lakes and rivers, especially to get to those secluded fishing areas. This lightweight kayak weighs 48 lbs, has a large, comfortable seating area with protective thigh pads and adjustable foot braces. Also included are two flush mount and one swivel fishing rod holders. a P.A.C. (Portable Accessory Carrier) that can be used as a tow behind or extra storage compartment, storage and shock cord deck rigging, retractable carrying handles, and a paddle holder. I like the 395 lb capacity of this yak and its great ratings on amazon.
Old Town Predator 13 Fishing Kayak
Like the other Predator models, the Old Town Predator 13 has a slip resistant Exo-Ridge Deck and Element Seating System. This side mount paddle storage gives you somewhere to put your paddle while you are reeling in the big one. This is one of the best fly fishing kayaks according to many sit on kayak reviews. If you are interested in a sturdy model for standing to cast, this is a great choice. It weighs 86 lbs and can hold 425 lbs max.
Perception Kayak Pescador Pro 12′ Kayak

It weighs 55 lbs and has a 350 lb capacity.
Lifetime Tamarack Sit on Top Kayak 10-Foot Kayak
If you do not have a lot to invest into your hobby, do not think that you will be land-locked. There are lots of cheap kayaks for fishing. For the budget-conscious fisherman, there are plenty of cheap kayaks for sale. This is one of my favorites.
The Lifetime 10 foot sit on top kayak has excellent reviews an adjustable padded seat, three fishing rod holders, shock cords, large tank well and hatches. It weighs just 52 lbs and has a 275 lb capacity. It has front and rear T-handles, a flat bottom hull design for stability. I would consider it another one of the the best fishing kayaks under 500.
Best Inflatable Fishing Kayak
Hobie Mirage i9S Inflatable Fishing Kayak with Pedal Drive
The Hobie i9S9 foot inflatable kayak may not be nominated for the ultimate fishing kayak award, but was specifically designed for would-be kayakers who have limited space. It features Hobie’s MirageDrive 180 pedal drive system to keep your hands free to fish. The i9S on-the-water performance rivals that of rigid boats, and has a 325 lb capacity. It comes with a wheeled travel case that makes this kayak fit into 30″x25″x12″ It comes with a four-piece paddle w/ aluminum shaft and hand pump. It for sure has a limited audience due to its high price point, but I could not skip out on including this one from Hobie!

The Lifetime Sport Fisher Tandem is designed to seat up to 3 people and hold 500 lbs. It includes two paddles, 2 backrests, three fishing pole holders and weighs 65 lbs. Because it is only 10 feet, do not expect lots of space or storage, but the twin hull means it will track well. This boat also works well for solo paddling. Although it is only 10 feet it does manage to fit a lot of a features into a small boat. The compact design means it should be lightweight, but it is still 65 lbs. It should only be used in flatwater. One of the things that draws me to this kayak is its excellent reviews on Amazon. You can check them out here and here.

The Old Town Twin Heron Angler is a 13.5 foot tandem kayak with a non-confining opening. With the removable front seat, there is room for hunting gear, fishing gear or man’s best friend up front! Its maximum load is 450-500 lbs and weights 62 lbs. Keep the weight limit in mind if you have two adults and a bunch of gear! Although it is not an “angler kayak” specifically, I think this is the best fishing kayak under 1000 for anyone who wants to get out on the water with their family!Click Here to read more reviews or buy on Amazon.
BIC Trinidad Tandem Fishing Kayak
The BIC Trinidad Tandem Fishing Kayakis a 12 foot super compact two-seater kayak capable of taking two adults and one child on board. Compact but wide, the Trinidad is an excellent kayak for double paddling. It’s a highly stable boat, designed for solo or two-person fishing trips. While it makes claims to hold two adults and a child, the 440 lbs weight capacity means that it will not work well for two adult males. Keep that in mind. This is an inexpensive double kayak for sale and still has foam cushioning, drink holder, inserts for backrests, carry handles and mooring straps, a rod holder, and weighs just 65 lbs.
Best Sit on Top Kayak Reviews with Pedals
The first thing to mention about these types of kayaks is their benefits come with a few costs. Firstly the weight. The pedal drive systems are much heavier than carrying a paddle. The second thing is the price. These kayaks are in their own price range however those who own one (I do not yet have one myself) seem to have great reviews! So what Fishing Yak is for you?
As I mentioned in the opening, evaluating your needs is the first step to deciding which yak is for you. Once you have a list of needs (and wants), budget will be your second consideration.
How much money do you have to spend as the price of kayaks varies greatly!
Thirdly, consider transportation. I have provided a big list of the top fishing kayaks, but you should not choose one that is going to be stuck in your garage! Do you plan on throwing it in the back of a toy hauler? The back of your pickup? Or how about on a kayak trailer? How you are going to get your new toy to the water is an important consideration!
Also an important consideration is the weight. If you bought the best budget fishing kayak but cannot carry it alone then what good does it do you?
In closing, If you have ever researched fishing kayak brands before, some of these good fishing brands will be familiar to you. You will have come across several fishing kayak manufacturers including:
- Coleman Kayak
- Feel Free Kayak
- Hobie Kayak
- Old Town Kayak
- Sun Dolphin Fishing Kayak
- Wilderness Kayaks
- Perception Kayaks
- Jackson Fishing Kayak
- Lifetime Fishing Kayak
- Journey Fishing Kayak
- Prowler Kayak
- Hurricane Kayaks
- Ocean Kayak
- and many others …
Among these brands, you will find the best 10 foot fishing kayak and 12 foot fishing kayak as well as the best single kayak and two man kayak. Because I am over 6 feet tall, I tend to gravitate towards the larger sized single kayak models, but there are definitely some great 10 foot styles (and some even closer to 9 feet for those of you who want to throw it in the back of a pickup truck) and sometimes, the smaller size will get you the best kayak prices (but check for yourself, you can often get a 12 foot model for not much more than its smaller counterpart).
